Pay Attention

I.    Attention: spend it wisely
•    I’m going to charge for this lesson – I need you all to pay…attention…to me
•    Resources God gives us
o    Talents/Abilities
o    Opportunities
o    Time
o    Money
o    Attention
•    Our responsibility to use them for gain – His gain!
o    In the parable of the Talents, the servants are asked to give account of how they managed those resources!
o    Think about a little coin popping out of you when you pay attention…where are those coins going?
•    I will talk about attention as somewhat different than “time” – I am speaking of mental engagement, thought, meditation, consideration
•    Others value our attention…sometimes more than we do!
o    They Actively seek to capture it and hold it!
o    They Profit from it!  Google, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok
o    They Employ astounding resources to do so
?    Garry Kasparov – Deep Blue, #2 Go player defeated by AlphaGo (retired from professional play!)
?    Much larger AI trained on you
?    “Lizard Brain” – haven’t we all ended up watching domestic fox noises?
•    We can waste our attention, just like we can waste our time, talents and opportunities
•    Pervasive theme: God wants us to pay attention when He speaks
o    Seek
o    Remember
o    Hear
o    Take Heed
o    Set your mind on
o    Fix your eyes on
o    Consider
o    Mind

II.    Satan wants our attention – how will he get it?
o    [1Pe 5:8 ESV] Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
o    [2Co 2:11 ESV] so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.
•    False teaching
o    Beware: Philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ (Col 2:8)
o    Don’t give heed: Fables, endless genealogies – things that minister questions rather than godly edifying (I Tim 1:4)
o    Don’t heed: Seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils (I Tim 4:1)
o    Have nothing to do with: silly myths, rather godliness (I Tim 4:7)
o    Don’t heed: Jewish fables and commandments of men (Titus 1:14)
•    Scoffers who say God is not coming
o    Don’t be Lead away with error of the wicked – fall from steadfastness (2 Pet 3:17)
•    Distraction and anxiety
o    [Luk 10:38-42 ESV] Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."
o    Many, many passages talk about not being anxious (Sermon on the Mount)
o    [Phl 4:6 ESV] do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
•    Desires, lusts
o    [1Jo 2:15-17 ESV] Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life--is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
o    Beware: Covetousness (Luke 12:15)
o    Watch yourselves: hearts weighed down with partying, drunkenness and cares of this life – lest you be unprepared for the day of the Lord (Luke 21:34)
o    Big things
?    Entertainment
?    Stuff to learn
?    Stuff to get
?    Games to play
?    The flesh, earthly things, right now

III.    God has a legitimate claim on our attentions
•    Aim, purpose
o    [2Ti 2:4-5 ESV] No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
•    Above, spirit, eternity
o    [Rom 8:5 ESV] For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
o    [Col 3:2 ESV] Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
o    [2Co 4:16-18 ESV] So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
•    Jesus
o    [Phl 3:12-15 ESV] Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.
o    [Heb 12:1-3 KJV] Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
?    Entangling and beseting are similar ideas about thetripping up and obstacle like nature of distractions and sin
?    “In your minds” – this points out that much of the struggle is happening in our own heads!  What we think!
•    Each other
o    [Phl 2:4-5 ESV] Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus…
o     [Heb 10:24 ESV] And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
o    [Phl 3:17 ESV] Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.
•    Ourselves
o    [1Co 10:12 ESV] Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
o    [Gal 6:1 ESV] Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.
o    James 1:23-24 – consider your face!
o     [Heb 2:1-3 ESV] Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard,
•    Good Things
o    [Phl 4:8 ESV] Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
o    Meditate, really – which brings us to Psalm 119
o    Psalm 119 – please read it!  Read it with attention to “attention”
?    9 – how can a young man keep his way pure?  Heeding or guarding it according to your word
?    15 – meditate on your precepts, fix my eyes on your ways
?    37 – turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life in your ways
?    Before dawn, in the night, at midnight – 7 times a day!
o    Constant attention on God and His Laws!?
?    Can anyone say this would be wrong?
?    Wouldn’t it be “boring?”
?    Can’t we have some “fun,” in our spare time?
?    What David Found in God’s Law:

?    Studies have shown that if you spend time meditating, engaging with scripture with your full attention, your imagination, and all – that your relationship with God, and the spiritual will grow much more “real” to you – it’s a skill you can learn
?    You may be able to hear the voice of God in scripture better, if you make time to listen – and you can only do that if your attention is available and focused
IV.    God pays attention to us
•    He knows us, and sacrifices for us
o    John 10 – I am the good shepherd, I lay down my life for the sheep, I know my own, and my own know me
•    He sees and hears us!
o    [1Pe 3:12 ESV] For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."
•    He cares
o    [1Pe 5:7 ESV] casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
•    God takes care, provides
o    [Luk 12:6-7 ESV] Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
o    God takes care of ravens – you are more valuable! (Luke 12:24)
o    God clothes lilies – he will clothe you! (Luke 12:28)
o    Fear not little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. (Luke 12:32)
•    He has a plan, and a wonderful eternal destiny for us!
o    [Rev 21:3-4 ESV] And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."
•    Isn’t that worth paying attention to?
V.    Where are you spending your attention?
•    Me?
o    I laid out my life on a chart, and extended it until I’m 80, and added up the totals
?    If I went to worship 24 hours a day, when I’m 80, I will have worshipped about 8.5 straight months (Jan to mid Sep)
?    If I continue to use my phone like I am now…4 hours per day – I will use my phone for 5 straight years!
o    11.5 years of time unaccounted for; “free”
•    Satan wants all of it
o    False teaching
o    Scoffers
o    Distraction and Anxiety
o    Desires or Lusts
o    Satan will try to capture our attention on sinful, ungodly purposes – but he is happy merely distracting us from what is truly important.  That’s enough.
•    God asks us to pay attention to
o    Our purpose
o    Eternal, spiritual things
o    Jesus – our example and Lord!
o    People - Each other and ourselves!
o    God’s Word, His Rules, His good things
o    Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also
o    We will be required to account for every idle word…what about the things we dwelt on, paid attention to?
•    God truly loves and cares for us – He wants us to go to Heaven with Him for eternity!
•    We should all spend more of our attention on the things God put us here for – let’s resolve to do that…today.  And Monday – even “Cyber Monday!”
•    If you are not a Christian – it’s about time you started to pay attention to your Creator!
o    He knows you, and loves you
o    He has paid the cost for you to be saved
o    He just asks you to
?    believe in Jesus as the Son of God
?    repent of your past sins, and turn away from them
?    tell other people that you believe in Jesus
?    be baptized in water, by the authority of Jesus, for the forgiveness of your sins
?    live faithfully until death, and you will receive a crown of life
